Lebanese Archbishop Reacts to Damage of Religious Statue in S. Lebanon
Video footage circulating from Sunday reportedly showed a soldier striking the statue with a pickaxe in the town of Debel, an act that drew widespread international condemnation.
Kfoury, the Greek Orthodox Archbishop of Tyre, Sidon and their surrounding areas, said in remarks from St. George’s Cathedral in Hasbaya that such actions reflect a broader pattern of violations affecting religious sites, as stated by reports.
He referred to earlier incidents in 2024 in which Israeli soldiers allegedly entered the Deir Mimas monastery belonging to the Orthodox Church, where he said they damaged property, entered the church building, and engaged in acts he described as disrespectful toward Christian practices.
He further claimed that the soldiers staged actions intended to ridicule religious rituals, adding that the latest destruction of a statue of Jesus Christ fits into the same pattern of behavior.
According to his remarks, the impact of the actions is not limited to religious symbols alone but also extends to civilians, with references to casualties and extensive damage to residential areas and civilian life.
