Lebanese Cleric Condemns Israeli Attacks on Religious Sites
Metropolitan Elias Kfoury said an attack in which a statue of Jesus Christ was reportedly destroyed in the town of Debel was part of a broader and ongoing pattern. Video footage circulating earlier showed a soldier striking the statue with a tool, an act that sparked widespread condemnation internationally.
Kfoury stated that such incidents were “not surprising,” claiming that there is a documented history of similar actions affecting religious sanctities in the region.
He referenced earlier reported incidents, including an alleged 2024 raid on a monastery in southern Lebanon, during which he said religious spaces were desecrated and rituals were disrespected.
According to him, recent actions should be viewed within the same broader pattern of behavior, arguing that the issue extends beyond material destruction to include harm to human dignity and civilian life.
The archbishop also criticized the characterization of Israel’s military as a “defense force,” stating that in his view it operates in an offensive capacity and does not respect religious or humanitarian boundaries.
He linked the reported incidents involving religious sites to wider consequences of the conflict, including civilian casualties and widespread destruction of residential areas in southern Lebanon.
