US Senator Presses Netanyahu on Christian Community Concerns

(MENAFN) A US senator has criticized Israeli leadership, raising concerns about alleged violence and pressure affecting Christian communities in the region and calling for accountability beyond public statements.

According to reports, Senator Chris Van Hollen addressed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a video message shared on a social media platform, referencing the prime minister’s comments expressing sadness over an incident involving the defacement of a Christian religious statue in southern Lebanon by an Israeli soldier, an act which the Israeli military has acknowledged.

Netanyahu had previously condemned the incident, stating early in the week that Israel “respects all religions.”

However, the senator questioned whether such concern extends to broader developments affecting Christian populations. He asked: “The Prime Minister Netanyahu said he was saddened by the images of an Israeli soldier defacing a statute of Christ in southern Lebanon.
But is he also saddened by the constant pressures put on the Christian community in Jerusalem and the outright attacks from violent settlers against the Christian village of Taybeh in the West Bank?”

According to reports, the senator also referred to a visit he made to a Palestinian village last year, where he claimed he witnessed the aftermath of an incident involving attacks by settlers.

He further suggested that there have been cases in which local security forces did not adequately prevent such events.
