UN Condemns Destruction of Jesus Statue in Lebanon by Israeli Soldier
A UN spokesperson said during a press briefing that the organization was aware of the incident and described it as "shocking." The spokesperson also expressed approval that reports indicate "disciplinary measures" were taken against the Israeli soldiers involved.
The official further emphasized that attacks on places of worship or religious symbols cannot be justified under any circumstances, stating: "The desecration of religious symbols, the desecration of houses of worship, is unacceptable, regardless of the religion,"
The incident came to light after footage circulated showing an Israeli soldier using a pickaxe to destroy the statue in the town of Debel in southern Lebanon. According to reports, the Israeli military later confirmed the event in an official statement.
This is not the first case in which religious sites or symbols linked to Christianity have been damaged in Lebanon during ongoing tensions. In a previous incident in 2024, airstrikes reportedly destroyed a church in the Tyre district town of Derdghaiya. Another case occurred in 2025, when a statue of Saint George in the town of Yaroun was demolished, with visuals showing military equipment involved in the destruction.
